At Home With Carrie

Hello ladies, it’s Carrie from the American Fork store. I want to introduce to my new blog segment "At Home with Carrie." My posts will feature home decor items from The Wood Connection. You may remember my wanna-be pallet sign that I made last summer.

For today's post I wanted to do a simple, fun, kid friendly post for you. This is great project to do with the kiddos since its so cold outside right now.

First here are the supplies:
3 boards- we stock them in the store, 1x8x16 for $3.25 each
4 mending plates and screws (brackets) from Home Depot
Drill or screwdriver
Paint
Acrylic spray
Glitter
Wood glue
Monogram letter tags (.99 at our store)
Brushes
Texture cream
Foam roller
Plastic spoon
Butcher paper/printer paper: for snowflakes
Scissors
Snowflake pattern (optional)

Believe me when I say SIMPLE, I really mean it. In fact it was so easy I enlisted my 2 youngest daughters to help me.

I painted my boards my chosen color. As they were drying I got my snowflake supplies ready (paper, scissor’s, patterns). I had to go back to my elementary school days for this next part. I guess it’s been far too long. As I struggled with the folding part my 2 youngest girls came running in and were fired up to help with this bit. (I had told them they could help when I was ready). So they went to town, folding, cutting making it look easy and pretty much making me feel old. I did draw the patterns for them to follow but, they cut them by themselves. So what if the cuts aren’t perfect right? Well, I kind of had to breathe deep and let go with this part, I wanted these beautiful snowflakes but in the end decided it was much more fun to let them help and boy are they proud. By the way theirs are better than mine anyway.

When the boards were dry I used the mending plates (brackets) to bind the boards together.

I turned the boards over and laid out my snowflakes,
I used wood glue and a brush to adhere them to the boards let dry for about 3 hours.

Some started to lift a bit but I just gently pressed down with my finger to make sure no lifting occurred. As that dried, I called to my little girls again and they helped paint the letters and I set about glittering them. Let me explain the glittering process. Super easy: While the paint is wet I set the letter on a clean piece of paper and sprinkled the glitter on top. Next I carefully shook it off let it dry and sprayed with the clear gloss spray. Remember to spray in a well-ventilated area. I sprayed in garage and had to bring them in to dry as it was -3degrees and far too cold out there to dry in a timely manner.

So while the letters dried I got busy with our texture cream. It too is super easy. I got a plastic spoon and dropped a few dollops right on top of the snowflakes. Using the foam roller I simply rolled it on until I got the texture I wanted. When it is all dry it feels like canvas. LOVE IT

I let that dry overnight. It will dry clear. Next I used wood glue to adhere the monogram tag letters on the boards. Let dry about 1 hour pressing down to make sure they stick to the texture.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE…..

This subway art type of sign was so easy and so fun to do with my 2 little’s. I think the saying is PERFECT for this CRAZY Utah weather too because "Baby It’s Cold Outside" and I am FREEEEZING!! :)

Big Hugs,
Carrie
